Nutcracker 3D – Zemeckis loves Christmas and 3D motion capture

Another item floating around the Hollywood rumor circuit is the Nutcracker in 3D.  Robert Zemeckis is apparently obsessed with Christmas, bringing us the current Christmas Carol 3D film and 2004′s underwhelming The Polar Express.  He also seems to love the 3D motion capture technology, and not only when it comes to holiday fare, see Beowulf and the upcoming Yellow Submarine in 3D (come on, isn’t the original Yellow Submarine timeless as it is, Robert?).   I’m not going to rant about the lack of new ideas and the overuse of motion capture. They’ve done a great job of that over at Geek Tyrant.  But at least Zemeckis is staying true to the original stories and basing The Nutcracker in 3D on the novel, The Nutcracker And The Mouse King.  And if holiday pictures and 3D motion capture gets people in the theaters, then I am all for it.  With the home theater market chomping up the movie industry market share, the struggling theater industry needs as much help as it can get to keep your local multiplex up and running.
