Youtube 3D – Hot or Hype?

Youtube 3D – Hot or Hype?

As we mentioned the other day, youtube.com has started a 3D channel.  Which is great, because it’s new and exciting…or is it?  Well, it is exciting, but not all that new.  It wouldn’t be right to slam Channel 4 for riding the 3D fan wave while churning out 20 year old technology if we didn’t take a critical look at youtube.com’s new 3D channel.  The main complaint I have is that it just isn’t new, at least not much of it is.  It’s great that 3D videos are all gathered in one channel.  And it is pretty cool that they have a drop down menu for different styles of viewing.  But it is all anaglyph style.  It’s the same old 1950s and 1980s red and blue style basic 3D that we all know.  It’s also been on youtube for ages.  There have been several anaglyph style 3D videos available streaming on the site since it began.

But there is a positive side.  It does allow for amateurs and indies to showcase their 3D editing and shooting talents online.  Also, the fact that they have incorporated ‘on the fly’ changes in viewing methods hints that they will eventually be stepping up more optimal 3D viewing formats as high refresh rate monitors and 3D video cards become more mainstream.

So ,although it is really nothing more than a bunch of anaglyph videos that have been floating around the web for years organized in one place, it does have the potential to open a lot of doors and become an outlet for some very powerful imagery in the near future.

And in case you don’t have red and blue glasses available, you can order a pair here, or just make your own.
