Polarized Glasses – Will they hinder the 3D market?

Currently, as we all know, 3D technology requires the use of some sort of eye-ware to isolate the imagery to each eye.  Hopefully, some day soon that won’t be the case.  Until then, there is quite a debate about whether the glasses themselves will hinder the 3D industry, especially when it moves into homes via gaming and 3D broadcast or Blu-Ray.  glasses come in all shapes and sizes, but they are still glasses and still necessary to view most 3D.

At the S-3D Gaming Alliance they put together a small poll regarding the effect of glasses on consumers reaction to 3D technology.  They found that gamers tends to not care whether they need to wear glasses or not to view 3D gaming content.  They make an interesting correlation regarding this fact.  Gaming is a focused action, whereas, TV viewing isn’t always focused.  People watch TV while they do other things.  This is where glasses get in the way.  Cooking dinner while wearing a pair of 3D glasses watching a movie in the background may not be the most comfortable action, unless you’ve had a bit to drink.

The pioneers over at Microvision Optical are attempting to ease the burden by creating polarized 3D glasses that can double as sunglasses.  Hopefully these will hit the market soon.  This should make 3D a little more accessible to those that are reluctant, at least until the technology catches up to the vision and we can chuck those glasses completely.
