3D REGZA: Toshiba another partner for RealD

Looks like RealD has snagged another TV manufacturer. Toshiba plans to work with RealD to develop “active eyeware” that will work with Toshiba 3D-enabled displays. At the 2010 CES they used external motion devices to show a person interacting with their upcoming 3D Regza TV. As we reported earlier this week, Samsung and JVC have both joined up with RealD. This, after Sony announced its partnership with RealD not long before that.
“Toshiba plans to introduce 3D into our REGZA line-up of Full-HD LCD TVs in 2010, and we are delighted to work with RealD, the clear leader in the industry”, said Masaaki Osumi, president and CEO, digital media network company, Toshiba.
It’s unclear of the actual role RealD is playing with these companies, because they are developing both polarized and active-shutter solutions and don’t appear to be trying to develop any specific standard. Our only guess, once again, is that RealD must hold some mighty strong patents on 3D viewing hardware, otherwise companies are just using them for some sort of 3D cred. I’m not really sure the general public will care if the RealD logo is on their TV or their glasses, as long as they enjoy the experience. That’s just my two cents anyway.
