HotHardware.com has a small write-up regarding the Toshiba Dynabook TX/98MBL, the first notebook computer with the capability of playing 3D Blu-Ray. It has a 15.6″ display at a resolution of 1366 X 768. The video card the machine is sporting is a GeForce GTS 350M, with 1 GB of video RAM. Standard it comes with 4 GB of RAM and a 640 GB hard drive. The laptop uses the Core i7-740QM.

It looks like a nice little 3D machine, although more powerful laptops are on their way and 3D Blu-Ray capabilities will become more and more common after the discs hit the market. It is pricey, as expected, rolling in at $2700. The downside is the resolution. For a 1080p 3D machine, the resolution isn’t quite what you’d expect. But it is a “first on the market” device, so I’m sure there are improvements on their way.

The two systems differ greatly and price, and the results of the comparison seem to reflect the difference. The Acer uses a passive polarized 3D system while the ASUS uses shutter glasses. As expected, the shutter style system gives better images and a better viewing angle (It’s important to note the Acer seemed to require a very precise vertical viewing angle to accurately see the 3D effects). Overall the ASUS faired better performance-wise on all fronts. But the framerate hit going from non-3D to 3D games on the system was noticeable. Overall, a great comparison of cutting edge technology and definitely more proof that shutter technology produces a better experience.

Looks like Acer is going to get a run for its money, now that Asus is taking 3D laptops seriously. Both laptops are part of Asus’ G series gaming line and will come in 15.6in and 17.3in. It appears both will use “Nvidia’s GeForce GTX160M graphics chip with 1GB of dedicated DDR 3 video memory.” Unlike the Acer 3D laptop that uses polarising glasses, the Asus systems uses active-shutter glasses. Which Asus said the “technology is better suited to coping with the 1080p resolution available.”

Third Mag is working on getting our hands on one of these, but in the mean time, RegHardware has put together a review with photos.
