When people get into discussions about 3D, often the complaint is something along the lines of “but I don’t want to wear glasses to watch TV” (As if a large portion of the population doesn’t already wear glasses all the time, even when not watching television or movies). Anyway, 3D glasses are really just the transition stage while technology perfects auto-stereo 3D (without glasses). Marketwatch.com released some information about a company called Zecotek which has a 5th generation 3D display that pretty blows every other piece of 3D technology out of the water.

Most importantly, the display requires no glasses. Also, it is a “true volumetric image” which allows viewers to move around to gain different perspectives of the image. Outside of entertainment, that concept alone has many applications in medical science and engineering.

The display doesn’t require any viewer dependent technology, such as eye-tracking or similar concepts. It also uses something called “motion parallax” and “occlusion effect”, which are described as:

Motion parallax is the apparent difference in the speed or direction of moving objects produced when an object in the foreground moves relative to an object in the background. The occlusion effect is the blocking of one object by another opaque (non-transparent) object located in front, but where the hidden object can still be seen if viewed from a different angle, for example, in the side view. The combination of motion parallax and the occlusion effect eliminates the sense of imbalance and dizziness which can occur with polarized and shutter-type glasses and which are contributing to concerns over health and safety of 3D viewing.

This is the technology everyone is waiting for. No more complaints about headaches or eyestrain or whining about wearing glasses. The future of 3D is right around the corner.

We are catching up on a back log of news from CES, so this didn’t make it to the site yesterday, but Alienware has released a 3D friendly monitor that is just starting to hit the market. The Alienware OptX AW2310 gives us full HD 1920 x 1080 120hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time. The site for the monitor also makes us curious about this “low input lag feature” which we aren’t totally clear about just yet. It also looks like they have worked out a marketing partnership with the Nvidia 3D Vision Kit.

Seoul, Korea (December 3, 2009) – LG Display Co., Ltd. [NYSE:LPL, KRX:034220], a leading innovator of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology, announced the world’s first commercial launch of 3D LCD panel boasting full HD resolution.

The new product is a 23-inch 3D 120hz monitor LCD panel for use with shutter glasses that delivers full HD resolution. It offers picture quality that is almost twice as crisp as HD 3D displays currently available in the market.

The panel adopts the company’s proprietary technologies such as “high performance 3D exclusive controller” capable of processing more than twice as much image data as other HD 3D LCDs and “copper bus line” to improve on the resolution and picture quality. In addition, the panel is able to reproduce both 2D and 3D images, meaning that users can switch back and forth from 2D and 3D modes.

Although full HD 3D images have been developed for contents such as video games, movies and animations, 3D display products with full HD resolution were unavailable in the market. The commercial launch of LG Display’s full HD 3D LCD panel is expected to help to boost development of high resolution 3D contents while allowing users to view true-to-life 3D images.

Mr. Davis Lee, LG Display’s Vice President and head of IT marketing department, noted “LG Display has made a major breakthrough in the display industry race to deliver the depth and dynamic nature of 3D images. LG Display will continue with efforts to keep pace with the fast growing 3D market with leading 3D technology and products in order to create new value for customers.”

The 3D display market is expected to grow at rapid pace as the industry players are shifting their focus from two- dimensional to three-dimensional technologies. The Korea Communications Commission recently announced plans to start a trial service for the world’s first full HD 3D terrestrial broadcasting from the second half of 2010. A launch of trial services for 3D satellite broadcasts had been also announced earlier in Japan and the UK.

3D tech company iZ3D put out a press-release today for their updated, passive, linear-polarized 3D glasses. Quite frankly, I’m not sure I care so much for the names of their glasses “Duuude” and “Gordon” or the website design for their company; however, the glasses have a somewhat stylish modern look. IZ3D primarily sells a monitor with a built in 3D system that does its best to create a 3D experience for gaming and some movies.

“Our engineers have worked hard over the past year to improve the current state of stereoscopic 3D technology. We’ve listened to feedback from current customers, and have applied it to our products. The new glasses improve the look of 3D gaming, and provide users a more comfortable experience,” stated Tom Striegler, CEO for iZ3D, Inc.

“iZ3D’s approach places all the 3D technology in the monitor so users only wear passive polarized glasses. This enables more participants at a significantly lower price to enjoy 3D in ambient-lit rooms without headaches, fatigue, or eyestrain.”
